Other big projects in Munich

By any one's standards, Messestadt Riem is a huge project. It is, however, by no means the only mega-project currently being carried out by the municipality of Munich. There are, in fact, no less than 7 of these projects. In addition to Riem, they include the

  • Theresienhöhe
  • Westend Media Factory
  • Rail artery
  • Panzerwiese
  • Ackermannbogen
  • Freiham

Munich's fairgrounds moved in 1998 from the city's Theresienhöhe district to Riem. Thousands of persons, dozens of companies, and an office of Deutsches Museum (Germany's Smithsonian) will soon be moving into the Theresienhöhe, which will be home to buildings containing 18,000 apartments and offering 200,000 square meters of office, retailing, production and other kinds of commercial space. The first phase of construction began in mid-2000.

The site on which the Westend Media Factory will rise is situated across the street from the Theresienhöhe. Previously occupied by a manufacturer, the site covers 22,200 square meters. Some 90% of it is reserved for use by media companies. The site's development will be entrusted to the winner of a tender. This will be decided upon in Spring, 2001.

Munich's rail artery is many visitors' first sight of Munich - the eight kilometers of transloading facilities and rail sidings lining the eight kilometers of track stretching from Pasing (the city's westernmost train station) to the city's main train station. The building of new facilities on the city outskirts and the upgrading of traffic management systems has freed much of the space flanking the city's main rail lines for redevelopment. Taking the trains' place will be parks lined with bicycle and hiking paths, and dotted with residential and commercial quarters. The buildings to be constructed in them will be home to 17,000 persons. Some 11,000 persons will work in the rail artery's commercial premises.

The Panzerwiese is located in northern Munich. Its name - 'field of tanks' refers to a previous use: as a rallying point for armored vehicles. The tanks are long gone. The original flora and fauna have taken their place. Today, 30% of the 200-hectare-large site is being developed into a new residential quarter. It is to have more than 2,700 housing units, of which the first have already been completed.

Many of the soldiers staffing the tanks lived in the Waldmann and Stetten barracks. The soldiers were reassigned to other quarters, leaving the site - the Ackermannbogen - on which the barracks stood, located between Munich's Olympic park and the main reaches of the city's elegant Schwabing district, free for redevelopment. This will yield 2,000 housing units, plus a large amount of commercial space.

Southwestern Munich is going to get its second world-class biotech cluster. The Life Sciences Park Freiham will be located a few kilometers away from Martinsried, which has mutated into one of the world's leading sites for biotechnological development. Some 80,000 square meters of developable land will be reserved for biotech companies and research institutes. The planning of the community, which is located 12 kilometers away from downtown Munich, and which will someday be home to 21,000 persons, is forecast to be completed by 2004.
Freiham is located within a few minutes of two superhighways and is linked to Munich's world-class public transportation grid.
