Plan formulated to create a new community on Munich's east side, one
compatible with the needs of the local environment and economy. |
| May 17, 1992 |
Munich
Airport moves from Riem to Erding, some 14 kilometers to the north. |
| October, 1993 |
Signing
of contract with MRG (Maßnahmeträger-Riem-Gesellschaft
mbH). The contract established the parameters of the operations of
this newly-founded company, which had won an EU-wide bidding process.
A further contract established MRG's responsibilities to be the implementation
of the development measures foreseen for Riem. |

The
17th International Making Cities Livable Conference names Riem "an
especially successful role model of how urban settlements can be developed". |
| June 3-14, 1996 |
Istanbul's
Habitat II calls Riem "an example of how projects of urban expansion
can be carried out in ways conserving resources and protecting the
environment". |
| April, 1997 |
The
greening of Riem is kicking off by the planting of saplings by Christian
Ude, Munich's mayor. |
| December, 1997 |
Messestadt
Riem is designated to be the venue for the 2005 installment of Germany's
Federal Garden Exhibition (BUGA). |
| February 12,1998 |
Commissioning
of Munich's new fairgrounds. Some 140,000 square meters large, the
fairgrounds are the venues for the events staged by Messe München,
one of the world's ten most important trade fair authorities. |
| July 7, 1998 |
Urban
21, a Germany-wide contest, names MS Riem "a project showing what
the regions of the future will look like". |
| September, 1998 |
Sale
of parcels in Northwest Business Park begins.. |
| October 9, 1998 |
Commissioning
of the International Congress Center Munich. With a seating capacity
of 7,000 and an advanced, in-house electronic infrastructure, the
center's 7,000 square meters now serve as the venue for some of the
largest and most technically-demanding events around. Able to be flexibly
configured, its rooms hold anywhere from 20 to 3000 persons. |
| Winter, 1998-99 |
First
of what will someday be 16,000 residents move into their new homes
in Messestadt Riem. As of this writing, 1,600 persons live in the
area. |
| May 29, 1999 |
Formal
commissioning of the new U-Bahn (subway) line linking Messestadt Riem
with downtown Munich. |
| mid-1999 |
Sale
of parcels in Messestadt Riem's Business Park Northeast begins. |
| December, 2000 |
DIFA
becomes the latest company to launch a major property development
at Messestadt Riem. |
Autumn, 2003 |
Completion of Riem Arcades, DIFA's DM 650 million
shopping and entertainment complex.

Messestadt
Riem will be the venue of BUGA, Germany's Federal Garden Exhibition.
Accounting for nearly half of Riem's expanse, the areas dedicated
to the show and connecting strips of greenery have already been laid
out. |
2013 |
Completion of development of Messestadt Riem.
