Munich's ICM - two years old, already one of the world's most successful congress centers, now launching a huge new hall

"We're pretty much booked up until 2006." The 'we' is the International Congress Center Munich (ICM). The person pronouncing this judgement is Karl-Dieter Demisch, a managing director of Messe-München GmbH (MMG). The city's trade fair authority, MMG built and operates the ICM.

The figures bear Demisch out. The ICM opened its doors on October 9, 1998. In the two years since then, it has been the venue for no less than 500 congresses, seminars, annual general meetings and other events. These have been attended by 300,000 persons. And more, much more, is to come. Three hundred and fifty events, some of them the largest of their kinds in the world, are scheduled to be staged over the next six years.

Two key causes of the ICM's appeal: it offers organizers a great selection and a great deal of flexibility. The center has 19 individual rooms. They seat anywhere from 20 to 3,000 persons. All of them can be configured to meet the wishes and needs of the organizers using them; all of these rooms feature state-of-the-art communication facilities and link-ups. Add in 7,000 square meters of exhibition space - nearly half of that in the center's soaring foyer - and you would seem to have everything an organizer could ever want.

As the roaring demand for the ICM's space shows, the world's organizers share this perception. The strength of this demand led MMG to build a new hall. Shared by MMG and ICM, the "Media Hall" is huge. Its 10,000 square meters can hold up to 7,000 persons. Located to the ICM's northeast, the hall was commissioned in early October, 2000.
