Munich girds to get to and from BAUMA, a mega-trade fair
March 27, 2001 Held every three years, BAUMA attracts more
visitors than any other trade fair in Munich. Some 380,000 persons
attended the last installment of the event, which showcases products
and services used by the construction industry and its suppliers.
To be held from April 2 - April 8, this year's event is expected
to attract nearly 400,000 visitors. About two fifths of them will
use public transportation to get to the trade fair. Joined by the
city's trade fair authority and municipal government, MVV, Munich's
transit authority, has spent the last six months drawing a schedule
expediting visitors to and from the fairgrounds
The schedule will enable the authority's subways to transport up
to 42,000 persons to and from the fairgrounds every hour. That is
far more than the peak totals--26,000--expected to ensue during
such popular days as Saturday. The schedule features the rerouting
of subway lines 7 and 5 to the fairgrounds, so as to provide every
2 - 3 minute service. The trains running on line 2, the traditional
link between MS Riem and downtown, are to be given a great number
of cars. Shuttle buses will link the local regional rail station
(S-Bahnhof Riem) with the fairgrounds.
To ensure that visitors won't lose any time looking for connections,
announcements-in both German and English-telling visitors how best
to make their ways to and from the fair will be made at regular
intervals at the two subway stations located in MS Riem-Messestadt
West and Messestadt Ost-and at all important points of transfer.
These instructions will also be provided on-line, at www.bauma.de
