"To create a community offering its residents a high quality
of life". That goal guided the work of the municipal agencies
and expert groups (comprising architects, landscape planners and
others) involved in the formulation of the masterplan guiding the
development of MS Riem. The masterplan defined "a healthy environment"
- one featuring large-sized, variegated expanses of green areas
- to be a key component of this quality of life. The implementation
of the masterplan was facilitated by a key factor: nearly all of
MS Riem's expanse was owned by the municipality of Munich itself.
A key feature of the masterplan is a generous allotment of green
areas. Such areas occupy nearly half of the community's 550 hectares,
with 200 hectares alone going for a park. Designed by the Paris-based
Latitude Nord and located in the community's southern reaches, the
park is a place of play, a place to enjoy nature. Comprised in the
park is a lake and a hill, both now under development.
Other green areas in MS Riem include a woods (situated in the community's
northeast), and the strips of grass, flowers and shrubs bisecting
the community's residential and commercial areas, themselves located
close to each other. These strips provide all those working and
living in MS Riem with immediate access to greenery. The inclusion
of residential, commercial and green areas is another central feature
of the masterplan. This inclusion accords with the principles of
Agenda 21, the program of action promulgated by the United Nations
Conference on the Environment and Development, staged in 1992 in
Rio de Janeiro.
