On April 28th, 2005 Germany's National Garden Festival will open
its doors. Better known under its German acronym of BUGA (for "Bundesgartenschau")
and located in eastern Munich's Messestadt Riem district, the festival
is the largest of its kind in Europe in two ways.
Four million people are expected to attend BUGA during its five-and-a-half
month run. These people will ooh-and-ah over the 30,000 trees, 200,000
bushes, 2 million tulips and 26,000 flowering shrubs planted on
the festival's 330 hectares. The core exhibition area comprises
130 hectares. Add in the millions of wildflowers dotting the festival's
meadows and there's certainly enough to be seen.
Whilst delighting in the greenery, the visitors will also find
time to swim in the eight hectare-large lake created for the festival,
to ride the PeopleMover making its majestic way 28 meters above
the festival's terrain, and to attend the concerts, fests and other
events being held there.
