The basic approach for
the redevelopment of Munich Airport takes shape. Once decommissioned,
the airport site will be divided into three zones. The north
will be reserved for businesses and the trade fair center, the
middle for residential quarters, and the south for nature. |

The airport moves to a
site to the north. The redevelopment of the decommissioned site
christened Messestadt Riem begins. |
| 1997 |
Gilles Vexlard and his
Paris-based Latitude Nord win a competition to design Messestadt
Riem's 200 hectare-large park.
The municipality of Munich is awarded the right to stage the
National Garden Festival in 2005. |
| 1998 |
The cultivation of the
park begins. |
| 1999 |
Bundesgartenschau München
2005 GmbH, the corporation responsible for the Festival, is
founded. |
| 2000 |
Rainer Schmidt (a landscape
architect), Rainer Bauer (an architect) and mps (a firm of communication
planners) win the competition to design BUGA. |
| 2002 |
Construction
work on the exhibition area begins. |
| 2005 |
BUGA is staged. |
