The BUGA-short for 'Bundesgartenschau' ("Federal Garden Exhibition"
is held every two years in Germany, whose communities compete vigorously
for the honor of staging it.
That's because of the media attention accorded to the event. This
attention joins with the Germans' proverbial love for horticulture
in unleashing a stream of hundreds of thousands of visitors during
each exhibition's six-month run.
For the communities staging it, BUGA represents much more than
opportunities to dazzle their residents' eyes with consummately
comprehensive, delightfully artistic displays of flora. Rather,
the holding of the exhibitions forms an integral component of the
re-engineering of entire urban districts.
As BUGA 2005's slogan shows, these re-engineerings have impressive
scopes and impacts. The slogan is "Building sustainable development
into a new neighborhood". The 'new neighborhood' referred to
is MS Riem. As the slogan indicates, 2005's exhibition is planned
to be an exemplification of sustainable development, the credo that
economic and environmental imperatives have to be engineered into
harmony if the human being is to survive.
The credo found eloquent expression at 1992's Conference on the
Environment and Development. Held in Rio de Janeiro, the conference
concluded with the finalization of Agenda 21.
Its 40 chapters pertain to all aspect of human activity. In view
of this inclusiveness, it's not surprising that BUGA 2005 is being
staged in both a main venue--Riem's landscape park, which covers
200 hectares--and in a number of the areas under residential and
commercial development in the district.
