Messestadt Riem:
a community built by families, for families

To thrive, families need space. They need spacious housing, and plenty of places for their kids to play safely. These items are in short supply in most of the world's cities, as are contact with one's neighbors and a say in the decisions made at the local level.

MS Riem was built to help solve that problem in Munich. It is replete with large-sized, affordable apartments and townhouses. They are separated by playgrounds and fields, and surrounded by one of the largest parks found in any major city.
MS Riem is a place where people get to know their neighbors - and get to say in the designing of the community. Since the first residents moved in, MessestadtRiem: Dialog (MR: D), the forum set up by the city of Munich, has been helping them get their say in how their community will develop. MR: D is where the residents get to articulate their concerns and suggestions, where they meet each other, where they get the help they need to launch projects.

Other places where families get to interact include the Familienzentrum (family center). Like a wide range of other organizations dedicated to developing this community in the making, the Center is located in the "Bewohnertreff im Galeriahaus". This venue for local interaction is found in the large apartment building occupying the community's southern reaches.
The Bewohnertreff is also home to the "Riemer Runde" of the "kunstprojekte_riem", which carries art-related projects in the community; the "Atelier für künstlerisches Arbeiten" (art workshop) which organizes art and craft events and courses for children of 6 and over; and "Echo e.V.". It operates the Quax youth center.

MS Riem has everything you would expect a family-minded community to have - plus a few things others do not.
- Like the opportunity for apartment-dwellers to have their own gardens. The Kleingartenanlage Riem e.V. allots plots to those with green thumbs.
- Or like swimming and sledding in your own park
- Or like skiing, swimming, hiking, or any other sport involving the Alps. The towering mountains and the pristine lakes nestled in their foothills are but a short drive away from Riem, which is located on the southeastern edge of Munich.
