Riem Arcades: a strong
first year
(July 27, 2005) Since
its opening in March, 2004, Riem Arcades has established itself
as one of southern Germany's leading malls. According to Jochen
Czub, its manager, "some 14,000 shoppers visit the mall Mondays
through Fridays. On Saturdays, that figure rises to 40,000."
He adds: "And the average shopper spends three hours in the
mall. That is an hour longer than the industry-wide average. While
here, the shoppers do a lot more than strolling around." As
Czub reports, the shoppers' propensity for spending has caused the
mall's stores to register rises in sales rise during the mall's
first year. This trend explains why none of the mall's stores have
closed down operations.
"That, in itself, is a major accomplishment. Some 10% of all
stores in new malls do not survive their first year of operation,
on average," notes Czub, who attributes the mall's strong performance
to the rapid development of Messestadt Riem and to BUGA, Germany's
National Garden Show. The largest horticultural event in Europe,
BUGA is being held in Messestadt Riem.
