(March 22, 2002) The construction of MS Riem's first residential
area, located south of the Messestadt West subway station and across
the way from Munich's trade fair grounds, is proceeding according
to plan. Some 830 housing units (home to some 1,700 residents) and
a number of schools and public service facilities have already been
completed. Work on the remaining units (1470 all told) has been
commenced.
Next up for the young community, which forms Munich's easternmost
rim and which is to be home to 16,000 persons by 2013, is the development
of the second of its fourth residential areas. This one will be
located south of the Messestadt Ost subway station. Some 1,250 housing
units (to house 3,000 persons) will be built on its 45 hectares,
along with educational, community services, vocational training
and sports facilities. Along with the area's shops and offices,
these facilities will provide employment to 1,000 persons.
Created by the Zurich-based Martin Albers and Pierino Cerliani,
the new residential area's masterplan intermeshes quadroons of low-rise
apartment buildings, variably-sized byways, zigzags of greenery
and artfully-placed squares into a pleasing mosaic.
Construction on the new residential area is expected to start at
the beginning of next year. The area's development is set to be
completed in 2005.
