Germany's National Garden Festival: big boost for Munich's economy

(August 22, 2003) Hofbräuhaus! Oktoberfest! Buga? All three are major tourist attractions. The first two are household names around the world. The third is about to become so.

Buga is the German nickname for the "Bundesgartenschau" - National Garden Festival. Long the largest of its kind in the world, it is held biennially. Next venue: Munich in 2005. The festival's grounds will be located in the city's Messestadt-Riem district.

Munich is number one for international tourism in Germany. The pull of the city and of the event will enhance the international recognition accorded to the event, whose officials expect to be attended by four million people.

Many of these visitors will be from elsewhere in Germany - and in the world. They will, accordingly, need accommodation. Tourist authorities are projecting 600,000 overnight stays during Buga. These stays will form part of the Euro 750 million which the festival will generate for the local economy.

This inflow makes the festival a very cost-efficient event. The festival's financing is coming from the municipality of Munich (Euro 7.67 million), the state government of Bavaria (Euro 6.4 million), and a wide range of private-sector sponsors.

The festival's homepage contains an English-language summary of the event.
