(April 28, 2004) Germany’s National Garden Show will open
its doors in exactly one year. To be staged in Munich’s Messestadt
Riem district, the Show has already sold its first ticket. And
what a ticket it was! It gets its holder—Christian Ude, Munich’s
mayor—into the Show, the largest of its kind in the world,
as often as he wants during the Show’s 165 days.
Made at the party staged to celebrate the year-long countdown
to the event, the purchase of the event-long pass was soon followed
by 600 others.
As Ude put it: “I really recommend the purchasing of an
event-long pass, as it will give you the opportunity to experience
the Show and its plants during all phases of the growing season,
from spring to autumn.”
At the party, which was held on a sunny spring day, the mayor
became one of the first to ride in the Show’s PeopleMover,
whose 3 kilometer-long track is situated up to 28 meters above
the exhibition’s surface. Installed in four and a half months
by Austria’s Doppelmayr, the PeopleMover will transport up
to 2,500 visitors an hour.
Right on schedule
The party provided the managing directors of the Show’s organizers
with an opportunity to report on the progress being achieved. As
Andrea Gebhard and Hanspeter Faas noted, most of the site’s
vegetation has already been planted, and all of the requisite construction
work launched. Both of the two key concepts of the Show—showing
how an urban quarter can achieve sustainable development and getting
the whole region involved in the staging of the event—are
being implemented.
The event-long pass costs adults €55 (advance sales) and €65
(at and during the Show) and children €10 and €20. Reduced-price
passes are available to those eligible for such at €40 and €45.
Part of the proceeds from the purchase of the event-long passes
will be devoted to providing tickets to needy children and charitable
organizations.
