Booming need breeds two new halls
Munich's trade fairgrounds just got even larger

In October, 2000, two halls, each 10,000 square meters large, were commissioned on Munich's fairgrounds. The commissioning came a scant two and two third years after the fairgrounds themselves opened their doors. Operated by Messe München GmbH (MMG), the city's trade fair authority, the fairgrounds had been previously located on a downtown site.
Broad-range success and a special-purpose need necessitated the building of the two new halls. Demand for space at events held annually on the city's fairgrounds has been booming. In 2000, 311 trade fairs, exhibitions and other events were held on the fairgrounds, at the adjacent International Congress Center Munich and at the Munich Order Center, located in northern Munich. These events were attended by some 2.2 million visitors - from 120 countries. They visited the stands set up by some 33,000 companies - an all-time record.
One of the new halls was built to meet a special need, that of the world's media industry for a venue in which to stage game shows, galas and other broadcast events. The industry wanted this venue to be located in Munich, the hub of Germany's television and film sectors. The new venue satisfies another need. Located at the western end of the fairgrounds, the International Congress Center Munich has been a roaring success, notwithstanding its lack of a hall in which to stage ultra-large (attended by up to 7,000 persons) events.
