(June 4, 2003) Time for a very big party! The construction of the structure housing the Riem Arcades, to be one of the southern Germany's largest malls, has been completed, from foundation to rooftop.

Before the carpenters and electricians went to work finishing the new structure's interiors and exteriors, it was time for a celebration.

And celebrate more than 2,000 persons did. Enjoying the traditional Bavarian fare and music were Christian Ude, Munich's mayor, top executives from DIFA and mfi (the Euro 500 million project's developer and manager), from the companies constructing the Arcade and from the mall's tenants, and, last and certainly not least, the residents of Messestadt Riem.

They will be among the shoppers patronizing the 160 stores situated in the mall, which will open in spring, 2004, and whose 119,000 square meters of usable space will also house a 280-bed hotel, 60 apartments, a selection of office space, a community center, a number of restaurants, cafés, sports and leisure-time complexes (including a multiplex cinema), and 2,600 parking spaces.

The topping off of the mall represented a crowning moment in the development of this huge project, whose construction involved the excavation of 550,000 cubic meters of soil, the pouring of 170,000 cubic meters of concrete, the using of 250 concrete and the employing of up to 1000 persons.

The latter number will rise to 4,000. Most of these will be involved in the laying of pipes, electricity and telecommunication lines and other interior work.

Situated at the very heart of Messestadt Riem, at Willy-Brandt-Platz, the new mall will profit from its great location. Its neighbor is Munich's trade fair center, one of the world's ten largest. Its catchment area, Munich's fast-growing east side and adjoining suburbs, has one of the country's greatest per capita purchasing powers.
